Reid on Knowledge and Justification in Physical EducationUniversity of Leeds, England Whilst welcoming Andrew Reid's revisiting of the justification debate in volumes 2 and 3 of the European Physical Education Review, this paper takes issue with his claim that physical education (PE) can satisfy the knowledge requirements of 'education' without making claims to academic significance on the basis of propositional knowledge of a Hirstian kind. This is not because PE has no educational significance; but because its significance (and also the significance of education) does not lie simply in the pursuit of knowledge. Further, the paper rejects the claim that pleasure is the source of the educational value of physical education.
