Age, Gender and Motivation for Participation in Extra Curricular Physical Activities in Secondary School AdolescentsSt. Mary's University College, England
St. Mary's University College, England The aim of this study was to consider the relationship between age and children's motives for participation in extra-curricular physical activities. In addition, this relationship was considered in relation to gender. The Participation Motivation Inventory was completed by 145 children who were students at a mixed comprehensive school. Results revealed age and gender main effects. It appeared that Year 7 and Year 10 children are motivated to take part in extra-curricular activities for different reasons. Boys and girls also reported differing reasons for participation in extra-curricular physical activities.
